Candy Corn Hat Crochet Pattern on Newborn baby - Salena Baca Crochet

Introduction

What is candy corn?

Candy corn are those little tri-colored candies you see around Halloween, you know, the ones that look like a mix of orange, white, and yellow—kind of like tiny, sugary corn kernels.

They are a classic Halloween treat, and totally nostalgic.

Candy corn has a distinctive, sweet flavor and a slightly waxy texture (some people even say it tastes like wax)!

This candy has become an iconic symbol of Halloween and fall in the U.S., and its appearance in various forms, including decorations and accessories like this crochet candy corn hat, adds a festive touch to the autumn season.

Is this hat just for Halloween?

If you think this crochet candy corn hat is a go-to just for Halloween, the charm and comfy design mean you can rock it way beyond the spooky season.

As cute as this hat is, it is not just a costume – this whimsical hat can add a touch of playful style for:

  • an everyday fall wardrobe,
  • an Autumn festival
  • Harvest events
  • a cheerful, fun, and unique accessory that brings warmth on chilly days.

Switch up the colors, and voila! This candy corn hat, in white, orange, and yellow, transforms into a stylish, slightly pointed accessory that goes with any outfit, any time of the year.

The candy corn hat transcends Halloween, becoming a sweet and festive accent for any cool-weather occasion.

Selecting the Perfect Yarn

What yarn should I use?

This pattern was first published back in 2011, made with Bernat Super Value Solids.

Thanks to the weight, value, and variety of colors, Super Value was my absolute favorite to crochet hats.

Unfortunately, the colors I used in 2011 are no longer available in the line of Bernat Super Value anymore. Boo!

The bright side is that there are tons of other yarns we can consider in the same weight as Bernat Super Value, and have a great range of colors to nail that perfect Candy Corn vibe!

To recreate this hat today, my suggestion is to give Premier Yarn Basix a try in the following colors:

Premier Yarn Basix is not the yarn I used to write the original pattern (and it is not the yarn in the modeled photo); it is a close replica in yarn weight, fabric feel, color, and price!

How can I choose a yarn substitute?

The stitch and row measurements of this pattern are important to match to crochet the right size hat.

That means the yarn weight and size you choose makes all the difference.

The gauge and size measurements for this candy corn hat are taken with Bernat Super Value solids yarn, using a US H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook.

When looking for a yarn substitute, I suggest first checking YarnSub.com — they’ve got at least eight yarns that are a 99% match to Bernat Super Value solids, and one of them is Premier Yarn Basix Worsted.

For a close match in the same weight of yarn, with similar Candy Corn colors, here are some yarns I recommend you review first:

To find the perfect yarn for your hat, I suggest starting with the same weight yarn and making a test swatch to see if it can give you the same results.

You can read more about how to substitute yarn right here: Understanding Yarn Substitution – An Easy Reference For Crocheters

Sizing Options

How many sizes are included in this pattern?

This is a distinctly decorative accessory, written for newborn infants up to a toddler age.

This hat pattern is written based on the circumference (measurement around) and total hat length (measurement long) in five different sizes:

  • 12” around x 6” long
  • 14” around x 6.5” long
  • 16” around x 7” long
  • 18” around x 7.5” long
  • 20” around x 8” long

Can I alter the size of this hat?

You can tweak the overall size of this pattern by switching up the yarn weight—go for a smaller weight for a smaller size or a larger weight for a bigger size.

And don’t forget, adjusting the stitch and row measurements is a breeze; use a smaller hook for a smaller size or a larger one for a bigger size.

To get the perfect fit, start by measuring the head, and then pick a size based on that measurement.
