Crochet in a Day: 42 Fast & Fun Projects
This pattern was first published back in 2019 as part of a huge collection I worked on with Danyel Pink and Emily Truman called Crochet in a Day: 42 Fast & Fun Projects.

If you want to see all 42 projects in this collection, you can view them on Ravelry right here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/crochet-in-a-day-42-fast–fun-projects/patterns
The three of us designed projects that didn’t use a lot of yarn, could be created in about a day, and had interesting elements like creative texture and fabric.
Our goal was to share projects that were not only quick to work up, but were also really beautiful and unique.
One of the most interesting and creative pieces is the Superstar Crochet Coaster Pattern designed by Danyel Pink.
This design is written for even a beginner to follow along, but it has lots of elements that are interesting enough for experienced crocheters too.
The cozy is worked in joined rounds from the center out, primarily using the single crochet stitch for the majority of the fabric.
Two colors are used (White, Robin’s Egg) to really contrast and highlight the star motif that pops out in the center of the fabric, giving the illusion of a snowflake in wintertime!

Need some inspiration before you get started on these crochet coasters?
While the example shows that only solid colors were used, people who posted their finished projects on Ravelry used self-striping yarns with short and long color repeats.

How To Make This Crochet Coaster Pattern
Yarn
Lily Sugar’n Cream, worsted weight #4 yarn (100% cotton; 120 yds/110 m per 2.5 oz/71 g skein).
Color A: White 1, 1 skein
Color B: Robin’s Egg 1215, 1 skein
This crochet coaster pattern was made with a worsted weight yarn in 100% cotton yarn.
To find other cotton yarns, or other brands that carry yarn like Lily Sugar’n Cream, I suggest looking on yarnsub.com and comparing the yarn used to write this pattern.
While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoy working with Lily Sugar’n Cream to give this project a sturdy fabric that can make a durable coaster.
Plus, this yarn comes in dozens of gorgeous solid, strip, and gradient colors and is very economical in price.
If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too fragile (you want the crochet ties to hold a bit of friction without trouble).

Pattern Notes
- Crochet Coaster motif is worked from the center out in joined rounds.
- Change color as indicated in the pattern to make “star” stand out.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round – this will help you to know where to sl st to join, and will also help with your stitch count in each round.
- Blocking your finished crochet coaster can help to smooth and even fabric, and make picot edging flat.
