What is the Basketweave Crochet Stitch?

The basketweave crochet stitch is really just a combination of chains and double crochet stitches.

However, the basketweave fabric is made when the double crochet stitches are worked around the posts of stitches in the previous row (or round) instead of into the tops.

By working around the post of the stitch, the current stitch and previous merge together a bit and create the raised look.

You can work around the front of a stitch or around the back, and that minor change will give a completely different look either way.

By alternating the sequence of working into around the front and back of the post, you’ll get the classic basketweave look.

The basketweave crochet stitch is worked with a sequence of stitch and row repeats to create the woven looking pattern in the fabric.

Basketweave Crochet Fabric

Because the basketweave stitch repeats the same pattern of stitches, the fabric it creates can be reversible.

Reversible fabric means that both sides look exactly the same.

However, because this basketweave stitch crochet tote is worked in joined rounds that also includes solid areas of single crochet, the single crochet fabric will determine the right side of the project.

If you want to learn more about right and wrong sides in crochet, here is a break down of the terms (with examples) to help you understand how to spot the differences:  Right and Wrong Sides in Crochet: What does this mean?

How can I resize the Basketweave Stitch?

The basketweave stitch is typically made with equal sections of back and front post stitches.

This particular pattern is made in multiples of 6 (3 back posts and 3 front posts).

If you crochet from right to left, the stitch pattern for your first row will look like this:

[bbb, fff] repeat as desired

b = back post

f = front post

Then, you’ll work that stitch pattern over 3 rounds before reversing the stitch pattern to work over the next 3 rounds, like this:

[fff, bbb] repeat as desired

What can I crochet with the Basketweave stitch?

The basketweave crochet stitch creates a dense crochet fabric without openings or holes.

The lack of open spaces in this fabric means that it will be far more dense, which is great for many different types of projects in crochet, like:

  • washcloth or dishcloth
  • table coverings like runners and mats
  • home decor like blankets and pillows
  • baskets and tote bags

Now that you have the stitch multiple to resize the basketweave stitch, you can make a larger or smaller single crochet circle base to make a basket like this one:

How many chains for a blanket?

If you want to crochet a blanket with the crochet basketweave stitch, you will need to know how many chains to make for the size you want to make.

The number of changes to work this stitch into a blanket will depend on a few things, like:

  • The size yarn and hook you want to use: You can start by using the griddle stitch pattern here to crochet a swatch.
  • The size blanket you want to make: After you create a swatch with the yarn and hook size you choose, you can decide how many chains to make for the blanket size you need. This guide includes tips to follow, and a cheat sheet with the most popular blanket sizes.
