If you’ve seen our patterns, heard crocheters talk about our courses, or stumbled into our community online, you might be wondering:

“Okay… but what is the American Crochet Association, really?”

Great question — you’re absolutely in the right place if you want to get to know the ACA (American Crochet Association).

At the center of this whole organization is me — Salena Baca — someone who’s spent her entire life with a crochet hook in hand and a drive to help crocheters actually learn and grow.

And, I started out with some slightly stubborn beliefs:

Crocheters deserve better.

Better education.
Better support.
Better community.
Better resources.
Better experiences – from the very first stitch to an entire crochet profession.

So settle in.

Here’s the story of how the ACA came to be, what it’s grown into today, and how it can help you reach your crochet goals.

Get to know the American Crochet Association - Salena Baca

Who is Salena Baca?

My crochet story starts when I was about four or five years old in preschool.

Before I could tie my shoes, I could finger-knit.

In my very hippie elementary school, I got my first hook and crocheted everything from flute cases to goat horns, for the school play, to piles of granny squares.

I was hooked — pun completely intended — and crochet quietly became my thing.

I didn’t know it then, but crochet would follow me everywhere:

  • Across states, countries, and continents
  • Through big life chapters and lots of moves
  • Through hard times and really tough times
  • Through the wilderness of parenthood

No matter where I lived or what life looked like, crochet:

  • Helped me make friends in new places.
  • Gave me confidence when I didn’t feel like I had any.
  • Offered calm when things felt overwhelming.
  • Made me feel capable, creative, and grounded.

Crochet wasn’t just a hobby — it was a lifeline, a teacher, a companion, and eventually…crochet became my career.

My Crochet Resume

My first crochet commission was back in high school — long before I knew this could ever be a real career.

Crochet didn’t become my full-time job until 2009, and since then, I’ve done a lot.

Salena Baca Holds Crochet Books - American Crochet Association

Here are the highlights:

  • Crochet designer with hundreds of published patterns
  • Helped to launch and manage Happily Hooked Magazine and The Pattern Pack
  • Featured designer in every major crochet magazine and across multiple yarn companies
  • Author of 17 crochet books (and counting)
  • International instructor — teaching workshops, classes, and courses across the globe
  • Founder of the American Crochet Association (est. 2015) — built to make sure crochet is passed through the generations, in even better hands than we found it

But here’s what matters most:

I’ve personally designed every ACA course, workshop, guide, and training program — all based on my very own real-world experience, tons of trial-and-error, and years of learning what actually helps crocheters learn, grow, and succeed.

No gatekeeping, no fluff, no “influencer hacks” with zero substance, and no AI crochet nonsense.

Just real crochet education from someone who’s done the work.

I’ve…

  • Taught absolute beginners how to hold a hook for the very first time
  • Helped designers write, test, publish, and sell their first patterns
  • Redefined how beginners learn crochet in a clear, frustration-free way
  • Outlined practical strategies to help crocheters price and sell their work fairly (without burning out)

In short?

I’m a real human — not AI content, not a predatory marketer who can’t tell a slip knot from a slip stitch, and definitely not someone trying to overwhelm you with unnecessary “tips” that waste your time, money, and yarn.

I’ve worked with teachers, testers, makers, hobbyists, and aspiring professionals — all with one goal:

To help crocheters learn, grow, and succeed.

Crochet has been my lifelong study, and helping people pass crochet to future generations in even better hands than we found it is my lifelong goal.

The Crochet Problem I Kept Seeing

I didn’t learn how to crochet from a book, a class, or even a real pattern.

I learned by osmosis — a friend showing me “their way,” a teacher handing me yarn and letting me figure it out, and years of just… guessing.

For most of my life, I had no idea what stitches I was actually making, and I didn’t know:

  • hook sizes mattered.
  • yarn weights mattered.
  • how to read a pattern — because no one around me did, either.

So I did what most crocheters do:

  • I crocheted whatever someone showed me
  • I memorized movements, not actual stitches
  • I assumed all hooks and yarns were basically the same
  • I made a lot of granny squares and blankets
  • And I repeated that cycle for decades

It wasn’t until my late twenties — after crocheting almost my entire life — that someone (thank you Danielle) showed me how to crochet in rounds, use different hook sizes, and read instructions in a crochet pattern.

And it was like the sky cracked open.

I thought:

  • “Why did no one teach me this sooner?”
  • “Why is this information so hard to find?”
  • “Why do we all start crocheting like this… completely backwards?”

That moment changed everything for me.

Because I realized something huge:

Everything I learned after crocheting for decades should have been taught in the first few lessons.

And if I could learn it — late, backwards, upside down — then it’s absolutely possible to teach it clearly, simply, and correctly from the actual beginning.

That idea became my obsession.

The American Crochet Association Began in 2015

After years of watching crocheters struggle without structure — and after finally learning the fundamentals myself far later than I should have — I knew there had to be a better way.

People didn’t need more random tutorials.

They didn’t need more patterns thrown at them.

They needed a foundation.

Something reliable, something simple, and something they could reference again and again to actually learn crochet in the right order, build real skill, and then confidently make anything they wanted.

So in 2015, I launched the American Crochet Association.

Fueled by optimism, stubborn determination, and a belief that crochet education deserved clarity and progression, I started the ACA with a tiny group of crocheters who were ready to learn together.

And we were totally committed.

Every week for over a year I hosted community events, wrote new lessons, refined tutorials, and built what would become the very first version of the ACA’s 12-Course Learning Path — a complete, structured guide for crocheters who want to build real crochet knowledge from the ground up.

From day one, the mission was simple:

  • Build a community where people grow with confidence instead of confusion.
  • Offer lessons that make sense — in order, and in plain language.
  • Give crocheters the skills they need to read patterns, understand stitches, choose the best yarn and hook, and finally feel capable of making anything.

And year after year, the ACA continued to evolve.

Today, the ACA is so much more than the beginner-lesson hub it started as.

But the heart is exactly the same:

Teach the fundamentals. Build confidence. And help crocheters succeed — for real, for life.

What Is the ACA Today?

What started as a simple set of beginner lessons has grown into something far bigger — and far more powerful — than the crochet world ever imagined.

Today, the American Crochet Association is:

  • A supportive online community – a place where crocheters ask questions, share wins, troubleshoot problems, and learn together without judgment or confusion.
  • A structured library of crochet education – lessons, courses, and tutorials that build knowledge in the right order – from absolute basics to advanced techniques.
  • A resource hub for makers, teachers, and aspiring professionals – Whether you want to sell your work, write patterns, or teach, we offer the guidance, tools, and training to help you do it well.
  • A membership-based learning system – with clear paths, ongoing support, and resources updated regularly.
  • A pattern and technique library – tested patterns, stitch tutorials, and technique guides to practice, apply, and build real skill.
  • A self-paced learning environment – you can learn whenever you want, from wherever you are, without confusion of where to start or what to do next.
  • A professional development space – for people who want to design, publish, teach, or build a sustainable crochet career.

In short?

After a lifetime of watching crocheters struggle, guess, and piece things together on their own, I wanted to create a place where people could finally learn, grow, and connect with ease.

So here’s what we’ve built:

What I’m Trying To Accomplish With the ACA

At its core, my mission is beautifully simple:

I want crocheters — everywhere, in every stage of life, with every level of experience — to feel confident, capable, and fully supported.

For far too long, crocheters have been left to guess their way through this craft.

  • Endless Googling.
  • Confusing tutorials.
  • Contradicting advice.
  • Stitching in circles (literally and figuratively).
  • Feeling like everyone else somehow knows what they’re doing.

I built the ACA to change that, and I want crochet education to be:

  • Clear — so people finally understand why and how things work.
  • Accessible — so you don’t need luck, the “right teacher,” or hours of searching to figure things out.
  • Frustration-free — because learning should feel enlightening, not discouraging.
  • Structured — so you know exactly where to start, and what to do next, with a path that actually builds your skills step by step.
  • Fun — because crochet should feel joyful, comforting, and creatively fulfilling.

Most importantly, I want the ACA to be a place where crocheters can grow in whatever direction feels right for them — whether that’s becoming:

  • a confident maker,
  • an educated teacher,
  • an artistic designer,
  • a successful professional,
  • or simply someone who loves yarn and wants to learn in a calm, supportive space.

And I want every part of this experience to feel welcoming. Friendly. Encouraging. Never intimidating or judgmental.

Crochet has been a lifelong source of strength, connection, and purpose for me — and my goal is to help others experience that same sense of confidence and belonging.
