If you love granny squares, give this Crochet Christmas Stocking Pattern a try with our step-by-step instructions and tutorials!

The granny square is a classic type of crochet because its simplicity and versatility, so this stitch pattern is a nod to that motif.

While traditional granny squares create a flat, square shape, this borrows the classic granny square stitch and forms a tube.

By working in joined rounds from the toe up, this pattern mimics a classic granny square without using any actual square motifs; creating a stocking that is nostalgic and timeless.

The best part of this pattern is that it is worked in one piece without any extra sewing or joining: from the toe, to the heel, the shaft, and even the hanging loop!

Crochet Christmas Stocking Pattern: Introduction

One Piece Seamless Construction

The Granny Stitch Christmas Stocking is made from the toe up in joined rounds of crochet – that means you won’t fasten off yarn in this pattern.

Yes, even the heel of this one piece crochet stocking pattern is worked into the design.

And, when you do get to the heel section of the pattern, follow the written instruction and video tutorials to work in simple rows that join together with slip stitches – it really is that easy!

Finally, the shaft and hook hanger are worked last, making this a truly easy crochet stocking pattern to work up!

Working in Joined Rounds

In crochet, joined rounds finish each round with a slip stitch into the top of the first stitch of the round.

This can be a useful technique when you want distinct rounds of crochet, or when you’re changing colors.

If you’re confused about what counts as a stitch, and where to join your slip stitch at the end of each round, here are some tips that will help: Does the chain count as a stitch in crochet? How to count crochet stitches!

Selecting The Perfect Yarn

What yarn was used for this crochet Christmas Stocking?

To get the exact size and color shown, you’ll have to use the same yarn I used: Lion Brand Yarn Rewind.

Lion Brand Ombre is the perfect yarn for this project because:

  • one cake holds about 219 yards, which is enough to crochet this stocking!
  • there are 14 color variations to choose from, each with a lovely stonewashed look!
  • this yarn is constructed in a thin ribbon (also known as a tape construction) which create a very interesting stitch definition and fabric!
  • Lion Brand Yarn is a trusted source that you can find in most yarn stores, at a great price.

The color in the example is called Olive You, which features tiny hints of cream that peek through the yarn and this a gorgeous stone-washed and boutique look!

This bulky weight yarn is made with a blend of fibers that look and feel like a paper and fabric mixture, and it is crafted to come in a thin tape (not round like most yarn you’ll typically see).

Get Creative With Color

You really won’t make a wrong yarn or color choice with this pattern.

Because this Stocking can primarily be a decorative item, make yours in absolutely any color combination you think looks best: solid, variegated, stripes, or even a new color for every round.

Each stocking you make is totally unique depending on the colors, and placement of those colors, that you choose.

Sizing Options

Do I Have To Use Bulky Weight Yarn?

Apart from having the freedom to choose any yarn color for your crochet Christmas stocking, you also have the flexibility to use any yarn weight, fiber, or texture.

That means you don’t have to choose the same yarn weight or type that the pattern suggests.

Keep in mind that the chosen yarn weight will impact the final dimensions of the stocking, and that’s perfectly fine; just measure as you go to gauge your own results.

If you’re uncertain about how your stocking will turn out with your chosen yarn, use our handy guide to measure your progress as you work!

How many sizes are included?

This pattern has one set of instructions to create one specific size crochet Christmas stocking.

If you’re using the same yarn and crochet hook that the pattern calls for, your project should measure:

  • 20” tall (from the first round to the final round)
  • 15” around in circumference (7.5” when measured flat)

Asterisk, Bracket, and Parentheses

The construction of this particular stitch pattern will be easy enough to follow after you work up a few rounds.

However, even though this pattern is not particularly complicated, the instructions to work up a multi-side motif in joined rounds requires the use of brackets and parentheses at the same time.

Because we use universal standards, terms, formats, and guidelines in our pattern work, you might appreciate a refresher on how to read and follow these repeat symbols in a crochet pattern.
