How to make a Crochet Sun Hat

Yarn

Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, Aran Weight #4 yarn (50% Cotton + 50% Acrylic; 207 yds / 189 m per 3.5 oz / 100 g skein): Stone, 1 skein.

This crochet sun hat pattern was published many years ago, and Cotton-Ease is now discontinued.

To find other natural fibers, or other brand that carry cotton yarn like Cotton-Easee, I suggest looking on yarnsub.com and comparing the yarn used to write this pattern.

While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoyed working with cotton to give this style the perfect weight and brim.

Cotton is a sturdy fiber with a nice weight to it, so the fabric it creates is perfect for this brim style.

If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too stiff (unless you’re totally into that kind of style, of course)!

You can read more about how to substitute yarn, including my best tips to choose yarn alternatives, right here: Understanding Yarn Substitution – An Easy Reference For Crocheters

If you would like to substitute yarn for this Crochet Sun Hat, here are some yarns I recommend for this project:

How can I make this hat in a size 24?

  2. Anjonette says:

Isn’t the video a different sunhat, and if so do you have the written pattern somewhere, I prefer to use a pattern to a tutorial. I really like that hat, but it does not look like the hat here in the directions. I looked for the lacey part and missed it, if it is the same. The picture on the young girl looks completely different. Please help 🙂

    1. Thank you for your interest and support in the ACA! We don’t have a step-by-step video for this particular pattern, but there are a few technique videos posted to help with different aspects of the design. Every pattern on this site comes in written form, and includes a PDF pattern you can find linked to Ravelry for purchase. Enjoy!
