Crochet Baby Booties Resources

What are baby booties?

Crochet baby booties are small, handmade footwear designed for infants or young children, typically up to about 12 months old.

Crochet baby booties are not only useful projects, they are also really adorable and cozy accessories for little ones.

The Knot Hard To Do crochet baby booties include a soft and comfortable sole, a snug fit to keep the baby’s feet warm, and are finished off with chunky crochet ties that you can easily knot into place.

Crochet baby booties are popular as baby shower gifts, newborn presents, or simply as a way for crocheters to build their skills and make something special for the little ones in their lives.

Crochet Baby Booties Sizes

Because crochet baby booties are typically for 12 months and younger, this pattern includes four individually written patterns, which are:

  • Shoe Size 1 (3 months): 3โ€ long x 2โ€ wide
  • Shoe Size 2 (6 months): 3.25โ€ long x 2.25โ€ wide
  • Shoe Size 3 (9 months): 3.5โ€ long x 2.25โ€ wide
  • Shoe Size 4 (12 months): 3.75โ€ long 2.25โ€ wide

Every baby, and every foot, will measure differently – That’s why this pattern notes finished dimensions (length and width), along with common shoe sizes and ages for each one.

You should always measure for the best size and fit.

Tips For The Perfect Crochet Baby Booties

Right and Wrong Sides in Crochet

Not all crochet projects have a right side (front) and a wrong side (back), but these crochet baby booties definitely do.

Be sure to note the right side of the fabric as you work the pattern instructions, and turn your fabric so that the wrong side is always on the inside: Right and Wrong Sides in Crochet: What does this mean?

Does The Chain Count as a Stitch

Crochet baby booties are tiny, and every round only has so many stitches.

Because this pattern uses chains to start each round, you’ll need to use stitch markers to identify the top of the first stitch when you join.

Missing, or adding, just one stitch per round will give you uneven baby booties, so this tip will really help you to create the perfect stitch count (and the perfect pair): Does the chain count as a stitch in crochet? How to count crochet stitches!

Professional Crochet Tips

It can be really frustrating to find the perfect crochet project that you canโ€™t wait to make, followed by a series of mishaps that keep you from creating the same thing:

  • the yarn doesnโ€™t work,
  • the fabric isnโ€™t right,
  • the size is all wrong!

And before you know it your project looks nothing like that picture you loved.

How To Crochet Baby Booties

Yarn

Peaches & Creme, Heavy Medium #4 yarn (100% cotton; 95 yds/86 m per 2 oz/56.7 g skein): Oasis x 1

To find other natural fibers, or other brands that carry cotton yarn, I suggest looking on yarnsub.com and comparing the yarn used to write this pattern.

You can read more about how to substitute yarn, including my best tips to choose yarn alternatives, right here: Understanding Yarn Substitution โ€“ An Easy Reference For Crocheters

If you want to use a substitute, here are more cotton yarns I recommend:

  • BLO = Back Loops Only

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern begins at the sole of the shoe and continues upwards in rounds.
  • Crochet baby booties should be tight fabric, so using a small crochet hook (G, 4.00mm) with a larger yarn (worsted, weight 4) will help to create that look.
  • Repeat each pattern size twice to make 1 pair of booties.
  • Change colors as desired. Example shows Color A worked on rounds 1-3, Color B worked on rounds 4-6(6, 7, 7) and Color A worked on rounds 7 (7, 8, 8).
