The Easy Crochet Bucket Hat is a quick project that uses basic crochet stitches and simple repeats to create a classic style in four different sizes!

This crochet bucket hat is made with two strands of yarn held together, making a thicker fabric for a sturdier brim (no floppy brims here)!

Simple stitches are used to create a solid fabric that is really fun to crochet (once you get started, it’s hard to stop)!

The pattern is worked in continuous rounds from the top down using just single crochet stitches, so you won’t have a noticeable seam to look at.

Follow the pattern instructions, or crochet chart, to create one of four popular hat sizes: 18 (20, 22, 24)”.

While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoyed working with Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton to give this style the perfect weight and brim.

24/7 Cotton is a sturdy yarn with a nice weight to it, so the fabric it creates is really nice for this bucket hat style.

If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too loose, or too stiff (unless you’re into that style, of course)!

The Easy Crochet Bucket Hat is a great pattern because:

  • This top-down hat is worked with simple stitches and round repeats.
  • You can easily substitute yarn fibers and colors to fit your personal style!
  • You’ll get to practice a lot of crochet skills: working in continuous rounds, using two strands of yarn at once, increasing, gauge & size, finishing techniques & more!

How To Crochet In Continuous Rounds

This crochet bucket hat is worked from the top down, in rounds that do not join.

This method of crochet is also known as working in continuous rounds, and creates a spiral without creating a noticeable seam.

If you’ve never tried to crochet in continuous rounds, grab a stitch marker and watch our quick video tutorial to see exactly how it is done.

Yarn

This crochet bucket hat uses two strands of yarn held together.

A double-strand technique will give this hat a thicker fabric without using a bulky yarn, and will also create interesting color variation.

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Medium weight #4 yarn (100% mercerized cotton; 186 yds/170 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein):

Cascade Yarns Hampton, DK / Light weight #3 yarn (170% pima cotton + 30% Linen; 273 yds/250 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein):

While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoyed working with cotton to give this style the perfect weight and brim.

Cotton is a sturdy fiber with a nice weight to it, so the fabric it creates is perfect for this brim style.

If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too stiff (unless you’re totally into that kind of style, of course)!

  1. I think I messed up! Is the 24/7 yarn supposed to be doubled with Cascade yarn? If so I really messed up. I ordered my yarn so that I can double 24/7with itself. Will that work? I hope it can, cause I have to make 10 hats.

    Sincerely,

    1. Great question Connie! Yes, this hat pattern uses two strands of yarn held together to create a denser fabric. To match gauge with the yarn you’re using, just use our hat size calculator to measure the rounds as you go and adjust as needed. Enjoy!
