What is a Tam?

“Tam” typically refers to a type of hat, often associated with Scottish or Gaelic culture.

It is usually flat on the top and can a pompom in the center.

The hat is named after Tam o’Shanter, the main character in a poem by Robert Burns, and has since become a symbol of Scottish identity.

Crochet slouch hats are generally characterized by a loose and comfortable fit, often with extra fabric at the crown, giving it a slouchy appearance.

The Unforgettable Tam Slouch Hat is a combination of these two styles – a large, flat motif at the crown, with extra fabric around the sides for a slouchier style, and finished with a few rounds for snug fit.

Unforgettable Tam Fabric

This crochet slouch hat begins in joined rounds, then works outward to create an open fabric on the top / crown of the head.

Basic stitches like chain, single, and half double crochet are used in simple repeats to create the open spaces and sections of fan-looking fabric.

If you are new to crochet, or following more complex stitch repeats, be sure to use a stitch marker to identify the top of the first stitch of each round as you work, like this: Where do stitches go in crochet: All the places and spaces to put your hook

Crochet Slouch Hat Sizes

The crown (top) of this crochet slouch hat are the same set of instructions for all sizes, and then the sides decrease to create the hat circumference.

After the crown (top) is formed, the Unforgettable Tam is written in three different hat sizes (and have three different sets of instructions to follow) by circumference:

  • 20.75″
  • 22.5″
  • 24″

To make the best fitting Unforgettable Tam hat, be sure to measure around the head and follow the instructions for the size that will give the best fit.
