How To Make the Sagebrush Crochet Skirt
Yarn
Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton, Worsted #4 yarn (100% Mercerized Cotton; 186 yds/170 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein):
- Denim 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4) skeins
The Sagebrush Crochet Skirt pattern was made with a medium weight yarn in 100% cotton fibers.
To find other natural fibers, or other brands that create yarn like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, I suggest looking on yarnsub.com and comparing the yarn used to write this pattern.
While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoyed working with cotton to give this project drape, flexibility, and durability.
Cotton is a sturdy fiber with a nice weight to it, so the fabric it creates is perfect for a crochet skirt like this one.
If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too fragile, or far too thick and heavy.
You can read more about how to substitute yarn, including my best tips to choose yarn alternatives, right here: Understanding Yarn Substitution – An Easy Reference For Crocheters
If you would like to substitute yarn for this Crochet Skirt, here are some yarns I recommend for this project:

Hook and Other Materials
Gauge
Pattern stitches measure the crochet skirt fabric, not the single crochet waist band.
- 13 pattern Sts = 4”,
- 7 pattern rows = 4”
This beginner-friendly guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of creating a crochet swatch to measure your stitch and row gauge: How To Crochet a Swatch
Sizes and Finished Measurements
This crochet skirt pattern is worked from the waist band down, in rows of crochet.
The waist band begins with a long chain, which is a crucial element for sturdiness to keep your skirt from sagging or falling down.
Next, the waist band is formed with a series of rows of single crochet; this is to further add to the sturdiness and to keep your skirt from sagging or falling down.
The waist band can be created to fit your natural waist (measured around, at the navel), or it can be made to fit below nearer your hips – the style is up to you!
Finally, because this crochet skirt is worked from the waist down, you can simply make the skirt longer or shorter by adding or omitting the repeating rounds of the stitch pattern.
No matter the style, you can measure your own fabric as you go to get your desired result.
- Waist: 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40)”
- Hips: 40 (42, 44, 46, 48, 50)”
- Length: 14 (15, 15, 15, 16, 16)”
Stitch Key
This crochet stitch pattern is worked with the following basic crochet stitches.
You can see these stitches in action as you watch these video tutorials (just click on the underlined text):
- Ch(s) = chain(s)
- Sc = single crochet
- Dc = double crochet
- Sl St = slip stitch
- St(s) = stitch(es)
Pattern Notes:
- This crochet skirt is worn at the true waist for a high waisted style; measure around torso at belly button for waist size, follow instructions for band measurement that is closest match.
- The Sagebrush crochet skirt begins at Band in rows, then is worked in joined rounds downward to complete the length of the Skirt.
- The length of this crochet skirt may be adjusted as desired by adding or omitting further repeats of joined rounds.
