The Sunset Crochet Wrap Pattern is made with just one skein of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, giving this simple fabric a gorgeous ombre look. 

That’s right, you can use just one skein of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball to make this entire crochet wrap pattern.

When Shawl in a Ball was first available a few years ago, I wanted to crochet an accessory that highlighted the light, airy feel of the yarn and the gorgeous ombre fade of the colors.

What is a crochet shawl?

Don’t be fooled by the term “shawl”; it’s not just something your grandma wears around the fireplace.

A shawl is defined as a piece of fabric worn over the shoulders or head, so a more modern term we use to make this accessory seem less old-fashioned is “wrap”.

While a wrap is typically defined as a loose outer garment, I think they can also fit into the shawl category.

Doesn’t wrap sound more fashion-forward?

Whichever term you prefer, this crochet wrap pattern is really easy to make (even if you’re a beginner)!

Is the Sunset Crochet Wrap pattern easy to work?

This crochet wrap pattern is easily made in rows of simple stitches that you probably already know (chain, double, single).

The stitches and rows have a slight alteration, so that you’re not just crocheting the same row over and over again.

That helps beginners to build their skills, but also gives advanced crocheters an easy project that’s not too challenging.

What yarn should I use for the Sunset Crochet Wrap?

While the stitch fabric is light and lacy looking, the ombre fade of the yarn colors is what helps to make this accessory really stand out.

You do not need to change colors in this pattern – the ombre yarn does all the hard work for you!

By working from side-to-side, the fabric looks darker on either end and lighter in the middle , giving this piece an intentionally dyed look.

That’s the magic of the ombre coloring in Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball.

I decided to use the color Sunset for this crochet wrap, but Lion Brand seems to have offered up to 20 different colors in Shawl in a Ball through the years.

But sadly, the last time I checked, Shawl in a Ball was listed as discontinued!

After a few quick shopping searches on Google, Amazon, and Ravelry I was able to find quite a few listings for Shawl in a Ball yarn in a few different colors.

Remember, you only need one skein of this yarn to make one entire crochet wrap!

How is the Sunset Crochet Wrap finished?

Did you notice the bright pop of cream around the border?

I did that to bring out the creamy strands in the ombre yarn, and to finish of the edge of the wrap.

The border is optional thought, and you can skip it if you don’t want to add that extra scalloped looking edge.

To finish this crochet wrap pattern, I do suggest blocking your finished fabric.

Don’t worry, blocking doesn’t have to be difficult or scary!

With Color A, Ch 85.

Row 1 (Right Side): Skip 4 Ch (first Dc + Ch-1), Dc, skip 4 Ch, work 5 Dc into next St, [skip 4 Ch, (Dc, Ch 3, Dc) into next St, skip 4 Ch, 5 Dc into next St] across until 5 Ch remain, skip 4 Ch, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) into last Ch – 81 Sts; 58 Dc + 23 Ch

Row 2: Ch 4 (first Dc + Ch 1, here and throughout), turn, Dc into Ch-1 space, skip 3 Dc, (Dc, Ch 3, Dc) into next St, [work 5 Dc into Ch-3 space, skip 3 Dc, (Dc, Ch 3, Dc) into next St] across until 4 Sts remain, skip 3 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) into last St – 81 Sts; 55 Dc + 26 Ch
