The Tassel Tote is a stunning crochet drawstring hobo style bag that’s not only stylish but also beginner-friendly.

It’s worked in joined rounds, using a mix of basic and specialty stitches, like the Chain, Single, Double, Slip, and Cluster stitches, creating a beautiful texture that’s both fun to work and sturdy to use.

The simple stitch and round repeats make this pattern approachable, even for those new to crochet!

One of the standout features of this tote is its boho-inspired crochet drawstring closure, complete with playful tassels on each end, adding a fun, laid-back vibe to the finished piece.

Why you’ll love making the Tassel Tote with the crochet drawstring hobo style:

  • The pattern comes with three different size options: 25” (32”, 40”) around, making it versatile for any use!
  • It’s quick and easy to work up, perfect for when you need a fast project!
  • Great for stash-busting, meaning you can use yarn you already have!
  • Works beautifully with cotton and plant-based fibers, but feel free to use acrylic too!

How to make the Tassel Tote Crochet Drawstring Hobo

Yarn

Red Heart Yarns Creme de la Creme, Worsted Weight #4 yarn (100% Combed Cotton; 130 yds/118 m per 2.5 oz/70.9 g skein):

  • 3 (4, 4) skeins

The Tassel Tote pattern was made with a a yarn that has since been discontinued.

However, Creme de la Creme by Red Heart Yarns was a medium weight yarn in 100% cotton fibers, which is very easy to substitute.

To find other natural fibers, or other brands that carry cotton yarn like the one originally used for this crochet drawstring hobo style, I suggest looking on yarnsub.com and comparing the yarn used to write this pattern.

While you can easily substitute yarn for this project, I really enjoyed working with cotton to give this project shape and durability.

Cotton is a sturdy fiber with a nice weight to it, so the fabric it creates is perfect for a crochet tote bag like this one.

If you choose to substitute yarn, think about the fabric you’re creating and be careful not to create fabric that is too fragile (you want this crochet tote bag to hold a bit of weight without trouble).

You can read more about how to substitute yarn, including my best tips to choose yarn alternatives, right here: Understanding Yarn Substitution: An Easy Reference For Crocheters
