About Crochet Christmas Stockings

Where did this idea come from?

The very first crochet Christmas stocking I designed was the Jolly & Bright, all the way back in 2013.

Let me tell you, at that time, crochet stockings weren’t exactly flooding the market—so I thought, why not dive into this under-represented category and shake things up?

Creating something fresh and festive was a total blast.

And let’s just say, I wasn’t the only one who loved it—more than 50 people shared their finished Jolly & Bright stockings that first year alone!

After that, I was hooked (pun totally intended), so now I make it a tradition to design and publish at least one new crochet stocking pattern every year.

You can find all my stocking designs in my Ravelry shop, just waiting to bring some handmade cheer to your holiday.

A few years ago, while sketching out my next big stocking idea, I had a lightbulb moment—there were too many good ideas swirling around in my head for just one stocking!

So, I pitched an entire collection to my publisher.

Spoiler alert: they loved it!

And that’s how “Crochet Christmas Stockings: 10 Delightful Designs to Fill with Holiday Cheer” was born.

What makes the designs in this book stand out?

Where do I even start?

These designs aren’t just your run-of-the-mill Christmas stockings.

What makes them stand out?

First off, I was not afraid to play with texture and style.

I’ve included elements like classic granny squares, chunky puff, popcorn and bobble stitches, stripes and even sleek cables – all designed to give you that extra wow factor.

Plus, I didn’t just stick to the typical stocking shape; I threw in some fun twists, like a Santa hat stocking and even a mitten-shape.

These patterns are all about making a statement, whether you’re going for vintage vibes or modern chic.

So, if you’re looking for new, fun, and fresh holiday decor, this book is your secret weapon!

Can I customize these designs

How easy is it to switch up the colors in each pattern to match different holiday themes or personal preferences?

Switching up the colors is so easy, it’s practically a non-issue!

These patterns can be like a blank canvas just waiting for your creative genius.

Want to go classic with red, green, and white? Done.

Prefer a chic winter wonderland vibe with icy blues and silvers? Go for it.

Feeling wild and want to rock neon pink and lime green? You do you!

The patterns are designed with versatility in mind, so you can swap colors faster than you can say “yarn sale.”

Can I adjust the size of the stockings, and if so, how would I go about doing that?

Absolutely you can adjust the sizes!

Think of the yarn weights and finished dimensions listed for each pattern as a guideline, not the law.

Want a stocking big enough to fit a toddler? Go for it!

Need something smaller, like just big enough to hold a candy cane and a piece of coal for your favorite troublemaker? No judgment!

To size up, just use a thicker yarn and a bigger hook—instant jumbo stocking!

Want it smaller? Opt for a finer yarn and a smaller hook. Easy peasy!

Go ahead and make those stockings any size your heart desires!

All the designs are made with Lion Brand Yarn – Can I use something different?

Of course you can use a different yarn!

Lion Brand is one of my favorite lines, and I can find most of their stash in my local yarn shops, so they have been my go-to!

If you don’t have access to the yarns suggested in the patterns, or you just want to try something different, these projects are very forgiving.

Just keep in mind, if you switch it up, the texture and size might come out a little different depending on the weight and fiber you choose.

But hey, that can be part of the fun!

Just make sure you check your gauge if size is important to you.

So, feel free to raid your stash or pick a yarn that speaks to your soul; As long as you’re loving it, that stocking is going to be fabulous!

How beginner-friendly are the patterns in the book?

Most patterns in this collection are totally beginner-friendly.

These designs range from simple and easy to a little more complex with texture and details, but nothing that’ll have you pulling your hair out.

Plus, the smaller size of these projects makes them the perfect playground for learning new stitches and techniques without committing to something overwhelming.

So yes, even if you’re new to crochet, you can definitely tackle these and be showing off your handmade stockings before you know it!

  1. Alpine Stocking would look really good with statement colors I love the green and white

  2. The cable stocking is beautiful!!!! That one is my favorite

  3. This is a great selection of stockings to craft!
My first favorite was the striped stocking, since it has a nice cosy old-school vibe.
But I like the motif stocking is even better!
It immediately took me back to olden days, when my grandmother (multi-talented master craftswoman) would sit and knit or crochet together with my mum. I remember fondly how the room then had such an air of ease and companionship, love and craftswomanship, resulting in many creative home decor and wardrobe items. Oh Nostalgia! How I long to recreate that vibe.
So… my winner is: *** Motif Stocking ***

  4. The Mitten Stocking would double as ornaments if made with a smaller hook and I love the faux knit look at the top

  5. Striped Stocking would be a great stash busting pattern since the various colors adds more character

  17. While the ‘Santa Hat Stocking’ is truly beautiful, and the ‘Thick and Quick Stocking’ is very eye-catching and most likely something my learning 9-year-old daughter would try, it’s definitely the ‘Motif Stocking’ for the win for me as the favorite.

It immediately made me think of ‘Tetris’ and invoked an endless amount of childhood memories playing the game on my Game Boy during weekends or Christmas break when I was a kid. :p

I’ll definitely be making this stocking some time during the holiday season (and hum the Tetris theme song as I do so lol)!
