Granny Stitch Blankets is my sixteenth crochet book, and the patterns in this collection go way beyond the iconic granny square!

When I was five, the very first thing I learned to crochet was a granny square.

Our teacher taught us the motif in class, then stitched all our little squares together to make blankets for our community.

It’s no wonder the granny square is such an iconic crochet design—it’s simple enough to teach by sight, and can become something as small as a coaster or even a full-size blanket.

After decades of designing with granny squares for wearables, home décor, and accessories, I wanted to give blankets their own fresh, modern makeover.

And Granny Stitch Blankets is exactly that—a collection of 10 bold, beautiful designs that use everything we love about the classic motif, but take it way beyond the iconic square.

You’ll find granny squares, triangles, hexagons, chevrons, even diamonds worked corner-to-corner.

I’ve doubled up yarns for unique texture, used chunky yarn for quick-to-stitch throws, and even made the weighted blanket of my dreams with a thick and heavy yarn.

Most projects are worked in pieces, so they’re portable and perfect for stitching anywhere.

Every pattern is throw-sized—just right for a baby blanket, a cozy lap throw, or a statement piece to drape over your couch or bed.

If you’ve got a soft spot for granny squares like I do, I hope the granny stitch blankets in this collection add a whole new level of joy and creativity to your crochet life!

Why I Wrote Granny Stitch Blankets

The first project I learned to crochet was a granny square.

And when I learned a large granny square could be a blanket, that’s what I made for every baby shower!

Seriously, how many granny square blankets have we made in our collective lifetimes?

While some people get seriously tired of granny squares – thinking they are boring or dated – I really love and enjoy them.

Granny squares give me constant inspiration, and I’ve had a lot of fun coming up with entire collections that use the classic motif in unexpected ways:

The more I make granny squares, the more inspired I am to bend their boundaries.

And when it comes to crocheting blankets, I don’t always want to just repeat a classic—I want to create a fun, new twist.

That’s exactly what this book is about: ten fresh designs inspired by all the things we love about granny squares.

Here’s what’s different:

  • Granny squares, triangles, hexagons, chevrons, and diamonds worked in fresh ways
  • Double-stranded yarn projects for texture and unique color blends
  • Chunky and super bulky designs for extra-quick throws (and even the weighted blanket of your dreams)
  • Portable, piecework projects you can take anywhere
  • Throw-sized designs perfect for a baby blanket, cozy lap throw, or a stylish accent for your sofa or bed

Best Yarn for Granny Stitch Blankets

Crochet blankets can be huge projects that use a lot of yarn, which can be too much of a commitment for crocheters who:

  • don’t want to spend a lot of money on a single project,
  • don’t want to feel bored working on the same pattern and stitch repeat forever,
  • don’t want to be stuck under the actual weight of a blanket for months.

That’s why each blanket in this collection was specifically designed to:

  • Use Lion Brand Yarn that you can easily find online or locally, at affordable prices!
  • Use all the elements we love about granny squares, but in completely new ways that are simple and easy to replicate!
  • Use designs that are worked in sections and smaller pieces, so you’ll never be mentally (or physically) weighted down!

When you work through this collection, you can have confidence knowing that I’ve already chosen the best yarn for each of these granny stitch blankets.

That means you can follow each pattern exactly, using the same yarn and colors, and get fantastic results.

However, every granny stitch blanket in this collection is adaptable, so you can get really creative with the fiber, texture, weight, and overall size to make these fresh designs even more unique.

Granny Stitch Blankets for Real Life

One of my favorite things about these projects is how portable they are.

Being under the weight of a crochet blanket when it is finished is divine!

But, feeling stuck under one as you’re working on it can be frustrating.

That’s why most of the granny stitch blankets in this collection are worked in pieces—meaning you can bring a WIP on the go and crochet anywhere: in a coffee shop, at the park, or while you’re watching your favorite show.

And because they are all throw-sized, these are just right for:

  • Baby blankets
  • Lap throws
  • Decorative pieces to drape over a couch or bed
  • Cherished gifts for loved ones

Crochet should be fun, inspiring, and fit into your real life – especially when you’re working on a blanket!

Who Granny Stitch Blankets Is For

If you want to learn how to crochet, you’ll need to have a few skills before picking up this book, and I recommend you start here: How to Crochet: A Step-By-Step Guide for Beginners

If you know how to crochet a little, but you’ve never made a classic granny square, you can learn how right here: Granny Square Pattern

Whether you’ve made just one granny square or a few hundred, this book is designed with you in mind, if you:

  • Love a perfect blend of classic and modern crochet — You appreciate the charm of traditional granny squares but also crave fresh designs that push the boundaries and bring something new and exciting. This collection gives a nod the past while inviting you to experiment with shapes, textures, and colorwork in ways that feel current and inspiring.
  • Want projects that are easy to start, quick to work, and beautiful to finish — Life’s busy, and your crochet time is precious. These patterns are thoughtfully sized as throws that won’t sit unfinished in a corner.
  • Are looking for designs that make the most of your yarn stash — Whether you’ve got piles of scrap yarn or gorgeous skeins you’ve been saving for “the right project,” these patterns invite you to mix and match colors, weights, and fibers. It’s a great way to use up what you have and create something stunning without needing a shopping spree.
  • Enjoy crocheting on the go with portable motifs — Most of the projects are worked in manageable pieces—squares, triangles, hexagons—that you can take anywhere. Waiting rooms, car rides, or while you watch your favorite show, these projects are easy to crochet wherever life takes you.
  • Want to make blankets that become instant favorites — These throws are designed with colors and textures that people will love, want to keep, and actually display. Perfect for anything from baby snuggles to housewarming staples, these will be cherished in your home or thoughtful gifts for family and friends.

This book is straightforward, with plenty of creative inspiration to help you make the perfect granny stitch blanket!

What Makes Granny Stitch Blankets Different

If you love classic granny squares, you’ll find a few in this collection worked in really unexpected combinations!

But, this isn’t your grandmother’s granny square collection (though she’d probably love it too).

Every design in this book is meant to be fun to make, versatile in style, and endlessly customizable.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Boredom-proof patterns – engaging stitches and color changes keep you excited from start to finish
  • Skill-building designs – learn joins, shaping, and colorwork tricks without overwhelm
  • Creative yarn play – solids, gradients, variegated, tweeds, scraps—you can make it your own
  • Custom sizing tips – throw-sized patterns that can be scaled up or down to fit your needs

And perhaps best of all—these are blankets you’ll actually finish. Because as beautiful as a king-size afghan is, there’s something so satisfying about completing a cozy, portable, just-right-sized throw you can enjoy right away.
