Introduction

What is a crochet cowl?

A crochet cowl is an accessory you’ll wear around the neck.

While scarves are lengths of fabric that you’ll tie or wrap around the neck, a cowl is distinctly a closed loop design that eliminates the need for typing or wrapping.

Some crochet cowls may incorporate unique features like buttons or ties, which not only add a decorative touch but also allow you to adjust the fit or style of the accessory.

Who is this crochet cowl suited for?

A versatile accessory, cowls suit a wide range of people, making them a popular choice for various ages, body shapes, sizes, and genders.

The Button UP Cowl is suitable for children to adults (just measure for the best size and fit).

nyone can wear cowls as they are not specific to any gender!

Wearing cowls is easy, making them an excellent choice for individuals who prefer not to bother with long scarves that require tying or wrapping to stay in place.

Selecting the Perfect Yarn

What yarn should I use?

This crochet cowl pattern is written with Lion Brand Hometown Yarn; a super bulky weight yarn made in 100% acrylic.

I chose this yarn because it has qualities that are great for beginners:

  • The bulky weight means less stitches and rows to work up.
  • 100% acrylic means the yarn is soft, durable, and not expensive.
  • Lion Brand Yarn has been around for decades, so this particular line should be easily available.
  • There are tons of colors to choose from, so you’ll definitely find one that you love!

How can I choose a yarn substitute?

As this crochet cowl pattern comes in several sizes, you should aim to select a yarn that aligns with the stitch and row gauge.

I suggest starting with a super bulky weight yarn and making a test swatch to see if it can give you the same results.

If you’re looking for a creative solution, you can try to hold multiple strands of yarn together (2 or 3) to try to create the same super bulky stitch and row gauge.

Sizing Options

How many sizes are included in this pattern?

This crochet cowl pattern is written in four different sizes:

  • 22” Long x 3.75’ Wide: 2-5 years
  • 24” Long x 3.75” Wide: 5-8 years
  • 26” Long x 5.25” Wide: 8-12 years
  • 28” Long x 5.25” Wide: Adult

Understand that the listed size ranges based on age are suggestions and may not precisely reflect every body shape and size.

For example, not all 2-5 year olds will be comfortable wearing the smallest size listed, and may want to wear one of the larger sizes.

Can I alter the size of this cowl?

While each size suggests an age range, it is always best to measure the person who will be wearing the cowl, and choose the length and width that will give the most comfortable fit.

The crochet hook, yarn size, and your own stitch tension can each attribute to creating the size of your fabric – changing any one of these items can give you a larger or smaller size.

Also remember that you can choose to make any size crochet cowl for any age that will best fit – no matter the size range listed.

Specialty Stitches

The raised texture in the fabric of this crochet cowl is created by working into the back loops only.

This technique leaves the front loop unworked, and can look like a knitting stitch.
